diocese). Each year CCSA provides services to people in need in the coastal San Diego region, including low- income and homeless singles and families This year they had more than 25,000 service contacts, giving people food, clothing and basic necessities and helped at least 150 homeless per week. It is managed by a small staff, hundreds of volunteers, and receives no government support.

St. David’s was also instrumental in establishing a rotational homeless shelter in San Diego supported today by a number of Episcopal congregations, called the Interfaith Shelter Network (ISN).

St. David’s hosts homeless guests for two weeks every year, providing sleeping space, shower and laundry facilities, evening meals, breakfasts, sack lunches and overnight hosts, with help from three support churches.

Each year as many as 100 San Diego County congregations of many denominations, and more than 3,500 volunteers, join together to offer a hand up to people seeking an end to homelessness. Since INS began in 1986, with the help of churches like St. David’s, over 184,000 bed nights have been provided for more than 7,500 people, with an astonishing success rate. More than half of the guests leave the shelters for their own housing.

These are just two of the programs that St. David’s has helped develop, nurture and grow. They also regularly provide fellowship for lonely seniors, a neighborhood preschool, space and advocacy for National Alliance on Mental Illness, Al Anon and AA groups, prayer services for hospitalized mentally-ill patients, and funds for struggling military families and international relief agencies.

In all provinces of The Episcopal Church, over 600 Jubilee Ministry Centers like St. David’s are serving the poor and oppressed in their communities. Many provide direct services—food, shelter, healthcare or other assistance. Others advocate on issues of human rights. Most do both, but all focus on empowering their congregations and their communities. Unpaid volunteers accomplish the vast majority of this work.

Take an investment tip from St. David’s and consider increasing your pledge of time and talent. By combining your gifts with those of others, the dividends are guaranteed to pay out richly for years to come. X
